I serve as secretary for an organization for SAHM. I was a SAHM during the time that I was elected to the position, but now I work part-time. I also head up monthly lunchs for moms and our kids and I am editor of the quarterly newsletter. I feel that my life is sort of evolving and becoming very, very hectic now that I am back at work. I want to finish my term as Secretary, but at the same time I am so busy with everything else in my life. I am thinking about resigning as Secretary of the chapter, b/c it has become a stressor in my life.
We have about 25 members and we have always had trouble getting members to be active outside of playgroup. There are people who show up to events, but never volunteer to do anything. It is a volunteer organization, but every year there are about 6-8 who hold the chapter up. It becomes draining after a while. I don't plan to renew my membership right away in 2007 b/c I need a break, but what should I do about my secretarial position for 2006?

Resign. You should never volunteer for anything you don't enjoy.

You are torn between needing to resign and not letting the organization down. Obviously you cannot resign and not let the organization down. You will have to make a clear choice. The choice should be to resign, but give them plenty of notice. Stick with that choice and don't vacillate if they lay a guilt trip on you. You are tired and worn out. Time to slim down your activities and stick with the necessary. Volunteers are not many and they will get abused, over used and worn out. You've reached this point; someone else will fill your position. And if they don't, not your concern, since you will have given them several months notice.

I usually hate the feeling of quiting something. Why don't you explain your situation with the president and see if you can't get help from other members. Perhaps you could get an intern from a local collage or university.

yes that happens - if you need to take time away do it and when you comeback consider doing a position with a buddy. So you can be co-secretaries and delegate, its easier if you take on a task and delegate small tasks to members
