Grapefruit juice increases your bodies' absorption of the drug, and then slows down its breakup in the liver, therefore you can end up with too much of the drug in your system.

Grapefruit juice inhibits the liver's cytochtome oxidase system, which is used to metabolize certain drugs. The result can be either an overdose or an underdose. Not a good idea to take grapefruit juice with theraputic drugs before checking with Dr or pharmacist.

The first person to answer is absolutely correct. However, I wanted to add that you should never drink grapefruit juice within two hours before or two hours after ANY medication!

Grapefruit juice is highly acidic. It will breakdown the Valium in a fashion that is untoward.

Grapefruit juice interferes with absortion and metabolism of valium by blocking the enzymes cytochromes CYP3A4 and CYP1A2.

Exactly what you said.... Anxiety. This is caused by a chemical imbalance to the brain. It can be controlled with proper medications. Since you are under a Dr's care already he can answer this for you. And go into more detail. Let your Dr. know the Xanax is not helping you. There is more than just Xanax out there that will help. You might have to experiment with medication until you find the right medication to give you balance.

Because you can overdose and DIE! Listen to the biology major talking about the CYP e\zymes in your liver. Take it from me, I am a Pharmacist!
