Been there the reason why is the kind of food its eating.When the poop it smells like there food to them so they think its a meal.I know gross but its true I have looked into it so much.Try feeding it a different kind of food see if that helps and watch it when it goes to the bathroom and if it tries punish the dog and when it does good give it a treat then they know hey if i dont eat that i get a treat.All the best

There are lots and lots of theories on this one. But, it appears to be a bad behavior. They don't find the taste objectionable.
You can try Forbid (get at vet) which has worked for some. Otherwise, pick up the poop as soon as it hits the ground! Don't let this behavior continue, good way to pick up parasites if they start eating other dogs poop.

I wondered the same thing! We have 5 dogs and I have only seen one Chocolate Lab do this. They are all fed the same food-Pedigree -- and they get some scraps and even some bar b qued chicken necks at times. They seem healthy and look healthy -- maybe it goes back to the nature of wild dogs who ate a variety of things to get minerals into their diet. Why do they eat grass? Why do they roll on dead animals (old dried up bones and hides of road kill) and stink ? They will eat cow poop also and then roll in it! Animals do strange things!

Because your dog is lacking certain vitamins or minerals in its diet. You might try switching the dog food he eats and see if he still eats poop. On most dry dog food made you will find that one of the ingredients is animal excriment, (poop) which helps with digestion. Talk to your vet and see if they have any sugetions. Are dogs eat Natural Choice and the one that did eat poop doesn't anymore.

I have heard its due to an Iron deficiency. I personally believe dogs are just disgusting and like gross things. I have 3 dogs though, so I can't complain about their strange behaviors!

Well at least you never have to clean up after them. Just go down to the vet and talk to them. They should be able to give you some stuff that will make their turds taste bad to them.

coprophagy is common in the animal kingdom, their digestive systems work differently than ours, in dogs it may be due to something essential missing from it's diet.

I was told sprinkling meat tenderizer on their food detered this and it worked.
