I don't tan because tan skin=dead skin cells which leads to cancer and premature aging to name a few. Some lady up above mentioned it releases a chemical that makes you feel good, she's referring to Serotonin I believe and it's not from the tan, it's a chemical in your brain which helps you feel happy and it's helps to be released from the sun or various activities like working out. I know this cuz I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, which means I don't get enough sunlight in the winter months because it's dark most of the time and then I get depressed 'sigh', so i have to take medication to help balance serotonin levels in my brain.
Hopefully you don't look that unnatractive just because your not tanned and maybe it will make you look a bit better but still is it looks or long term health, you gotta choose one, it contributes to wrinkles, you want to be a wrinkly lady or one who has less wrinkles and hopefully you won't regret it later like some old folks do and try to tell the youngins to watch out but they don't neccesarily want to hear it.

Some people are naturally tanned so do they have naturally destroyed skin. I don't think so! A tan is caused by the melanin in the skin. I think you're confusing tanning and being burnt. Being burnt does not always lead to a tan and for those people out there who are constantly getting burnt, for goodness sakes people don't stay out there until you're burnt to crisp. I'm lucky, cause no amount of sun is going to give someone the chocolate brown colour I have!

To tan safely without burning follow these steps:

1. Start with 10 or 15 minutes of exposure to the sun or a tanning lamp, and gradually increase the time as your body becomes more tanned.

2. Start with a sunscreen with an SPF factor of under 15, but no less than 8.

3. Keep skin moisturized with after-sun lotion - preferably with aloe - to make your tan last.

4. If you notice your starting to burn put on a hat, cover up, or go inside!

5. Some medications (especially acne medications) lower your resistance to sun.

6. If you are light-skinned/fair, you are more prone to sunburn than people with darker complexions take extra precautions

Umm, that's EXACTLY what a tan is: destroyed skin!

I personally hate the whole concept of tanning and this obsession some people seem to have to sit out in the sun to bake like a Hot Pocket baffles me.

I'm already a nice coffee color already so when I tan, I get too dark for my own liking (I never did like dark meat).

I hate the sun. I avoid it at all costs. When I'm on the beach, I HAVE to have one of those big beach umbrellas to hide under them. On sunny days, I stay religiously on the shaded part of the street. You can all me "The Big Nocturnal D" because I worship the nighttime, the moon, and the pretty skyline that's lit up ONLY at night!

I know the sun causes premature aging of the skin (that's WRINKLES, people!) and I don't want to look like I'm 50-years-old when I'm only 35.

God damn you, Sun! God DAMN you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure. I mean I don't really pursue a tan, I spend alot of time outdoors during summer and tans just happen. I use sunscreen and I definitely moisturize, but a bit of tan makes you look healthier.

Trust me...many many people will do it...I did it for years...until I developed melanoma. Many people around me continue to do it even after I went through this. Guess it's the price to pay to look good.

I had to update my comment after seeing all the cluelessness out there - tan or burn, it's damaged skin either way...damaged skin can lead to skin cancer...no matter what race you are. There are other sources of vitamin D available too, btw...(mushrooms are a good source as is milk).

I could really care less if it is destroyed skin or not. I work out in the sun anyways, so there is no way to get around it. I don't burn anyway. I would rather have some color than be glow in the dark white.

What people don't uderstand about the sun and how it is dangerous to the skin is this. In order for your skin to tan, you have to increase the production of melanin - In order to do this, you have to trigger the rapid extra production of melanocytes. This rapid reproduction is what causes skin cancer. What happens is that once the melanocytes are triggered to rapidly produce - sometimes they go wild and continue to produce at a rapid rate which in turn causes skin cancer!

No. I don't see the point. People who tan usually overdo it and then turn orange.

People shouldn't avoid the sun but they shouldn't overdo it either. Moderation is the key.
