Honestly, I think you should find him a good home. You are not going to change a dog's basic personality no more than you are a human. He is what he is. I don't know what you mean by trying to "toughen" him up, but it won't work. If anything, you will make him mean.

You might want to be careful. That's an unpredictable mix of breeds you have there. The Chow/German Shepard can turn easily. I don't think I would want that mix around small kids.
He sounds like he has a personality conflict with you. Give him to someone that will let him be himself and love him for that.

Dogs are just like people. Some are more assertive than others. So he is afraid of his shadow or strangers or whatever. Maybe your other dogs have bullied him, like humans do, into submission. But, I bet he loves you like no other dog and that is what counts.

I would guess your trying to toughen him up is the same way the other dogs bullied him into submission.

Dogs are descents of wolves. There is a alpha order in wolves. Only the alpha male and female can mate. The others are bullied from birth/early in life that only the alpha is the boss.

Let nature take its course. When our older female lab died, our other lab became alpha and began to protect, etc. How do I now the first lab was alpha? Because the day we bought the second one home, she lite into her and you could tell she was saying, "I am boss."

Enjoy your dog for the beautiful animal he is!

We can not know if she was frightened or attacked by a much larger dog or why she is shy. Most dogs will chase anything that runs and if her big brother or you look her in the eye that is a look of aggression and most smart dogs will back down from that. The three year old just does not attempt to intimidate other animals and it works. If you look a dog in the eyes they should and will look away. I saw a young girl try to see the eyes of a fluffy long haired dog and the dog bite her on the nose. My vet gave my Chi her shots and she was so good he held her up and told her that she was a good girl. It is not a good idea to look strange dogs in the eye.

Take your dog to an obedience class that uses positive reinforcement and motivation. You'll learn about your dog and as your dog learns new things, his confidence will increase in a good way. He'll learn appropriate ways to earn praise and attention, and with that comes confidence.
You will benefit, too, by realizing that instead of demeaning your dog, you can help him reach his potential and build a relationship with him.

You should socialize him with other dogs and see if that helps. Maybe he has gotten use to being the underdog with the other ones ganging up on him. If that don't help, love him for the way he is :)

first ove all do the other dogs think of you as the leader of the pack???? (to find out stare at the other dogs, if they think of you as being domanat, theyll look away[when dogs stare at domanat males it means theyre challenging them ]) so when your gm looks at you turn away, should work.

also, is your dog big or is he whimpy??? that could be the problem.

oh also try taking the domanat dog, and keeping him away from the other dogs for a couple of days, this also works. good luck!!!!!

Dods are like their owners. Once a wuss, always a wuss.

Read a book and learn English might help. No dog's going to be "tough" when his master's an idiot.
