Should it be made legally mandatory for any person or group upon entering the U.S. through a legal entry point to show respect to the symbol of this nation by saluting the stars and stripes upon entry into the country?
A simple salute as you pass would be sufficient, then you could stomp, urinate upon, burn or mutilate to your hearts content. Would that be asking too much?

Stealth, I do not need to watch movies of war. Like yourself, I have been to war and carry my scars proudly. I am not advocating mutilation of MY nations symbol,if a thing like that were done within my sight there would be bodies to recover. You misunderstood the question.

You want my honest opinion? I fervently wish it would become illegal to mutilate the flag in any shape or form ... I wouldn't dream of being disrespectful to any nation's symbols, and I can't for the life of me see that it is OK to be disrespectful to ours ... I agree with free speech and all that, but I also think there's a limit .. too many people have fought and died for this country ... too many people have given their all to build up this country ... if we don't show respect for the symbol of this country, why not spit on the grave stones of all those who died for the right to fly that flag? I know I'm probably in a minority of one on this one, but I do feel strongly about it ... sorry, I'm sure I'll get some wonderful hate mail, but I don't give a damn ... don't desecrete the flag!! Ever!!!!!

I Think The Disrespect Shown To Our Nation
AND Our Flag
In The Name Of
"Freedom Of Speech"
Has Gone Unaddressed For Too Long
And It Happens WAY Too Much

It Is Going To Be Up To US
WE THE PEOPLE
To Kick Some @$$
To Regenerate The Respect
That Our Nation
AND Our Flag
Deserve

WE THE PEOPLE Are Obligated
To DEMAND Respect For This Nation And Our Flag

Our Fathers And Grandfathers And Many Of US
Have Fought In Wars
And Spilled Blood
And DIED
For That Flag

I'll Be DAMNED
If Someone Is Going To Deface My Flag
Or Piss On My Flag
Or Burn My Flag
While I Stand By And Watch It Happen

If they can't respect our flag, they sure as hell don't respect our nation and should leave now! We have the greatest nation on earth and the most beautiful flag. What other country has a flag remotely close to ours? None. Mexico's flag looks just like Italy's flag except for the buzzard so appropriately in the middle.

I like Ryan's answer. I totally agree with him.

Can't do it through enacted laws. That's compelled speech (even if symbolic) and thus a violation of the 1st Amendment.

And it's unlikely that a constitutional Amendment would pass requiring people to perform a certain type of expressive conduct/behavior. Too difficult to enforce.

Depends on your point of view. I do not support a flag burning ban amendment.

Do I think people that burn our flag are low life scum bags and think that they do not deserve to live in a country where that freedom was earned by our our brave armed services? Duh!

My worry is more of a religious one. Raising the flag up officially, smacks of idol worship!

My 2 cents...

since when does arson constitute free speech? the flag is a symbol of this great country and should be protected. free speech is covered thru verbal or written conversation....it was some wacko liberal judges that decided it was up to them to "read between the lines" of the constitution to find things that pertained to their point of view. our founding fathers were the best and brightest and made things as clear as possible. it is an arrogant, conceited individual that thinks they know what the authors of our constitution really meant!

I don't think it should constitutionally protected. On the other hand I think we should do our best to protect the flag as a symbol of our sovereignty. People who burn the American flag are sick people. But I suppose it's not illegal to be sick.

How about showing respect for our flag all the time, or just get the hell out if you don't like this country that much.

No... if you mutilate, you go back to where you came from. Burn? Are you kidding me?

You are ignorant...

Watch "Saving Private Ryan" and the other 1,000 U.S. war movies based on true stories, and you answer the question on your own.
