Will the AS rate help me for a career as an Aircraft Mechanic?
Do they work on the engines?

No AS won't help you with aircraft mechanics. If that's what you want to work on then you need to go for AD which is Aviation Machinist's Mate. That would be your primary avaiation rate for engines.

You have join the US Navy and go through basic training and then you sign up for whatever you want to do. Aircraft Mechanics work on Engines.
