I lived in Sydney for seven years and flew back to NY yearly for holidays. NO direct flights from Melbourne. You would fly Melbourne to Sydney, 4-5 hours depending on AC type, weather, then either Sydney,Osaka,LA (14-18hrs.) or, Sydney-Hawaii (10hrs)then Hawaii-LA (5.5-6hrs). I usually took Sydney-LA (14hrs.) then LA to NY (6hrs). Fastest estimated time Melb-Syd-LAX-NY=24hrs. Plan on flying over in "one swoop" then, to avoid jet lag, sleep at your normal time! not when you get tired, or you will never catch up. Going back, break up the trip, one day in LA, then LAX to SYD to Melb. Have fun!

About 20 hours, but it can fluctuate depending on conditions like headwind, windspeed... Though I think you'll need to stopover and catch a transferring flight as there are (to my knowledge no direct flights). On the Qantas website, flight from Melbourne - Los Angeles - New York will take about 22 - 24 hours.

Is there an airline that flies a Melbourne to New York route? I know that Quantas flies Austrailia to Los Angeles flights but I didn't know there was an airline making an Austrailia to New York flight.

If there is an airline that does this route then I would love a job flying for them. I am currently searching for an airline job.

Shack up with a rich jet setter. Always cheaper if someone else is buying the ticket. Subscribe to the specials emailed out by each airline and wait for a special on business class flights. You will rarely see a first class special. One special that seems to reoccur is to buy one business class seat and get a second one at a discount. You will still never get a flight anywhere near economy prices. You could also buy an economy ticket and use frequent flier points to upgrade to business.
