Satan works at making mortal lose their souls to him for a couple of reasons. 1) to take them away from Christ because he does not want us to have peace in the eternal afterlife.
2) Spite. After he himself was kicked out of heaven after trying to over throw Christ (God) from the throne, he does all that he can to enhance his "kingdom" during the time in which he is allotted to reign on earth before the second coming of Christ for His children.
3)He wants to prove that he can get what God gets....Praise and Worship. Because he envy and covets after what God has created...a people in His image.
4) Because he is enviouse that man can turn the ear of God, that we can be redeemed and restored to a relationship that will gain us entry into heaven...a place that he will never be able to set foot into again.

Ok, so while I'm Wiccan and don't believe in "Satan" I'll answer this from a logical standpoint. Why would he want to win souls and what's in it for him? Well, think about it. He was God's right hand man, powerful in his own right, but he wanted more. He wanted it all. If he wins a soul for Hell, it's one less soul that God gets. The more he wins, the less God does. It's just numbers, majority and showing that he's a success, just like God. At least that's how I see it.

Because man is made in God's image, Satan hates mankind. Satan also knows the Bible better than most Christians. He knows that his time is short, and he knows how grievous it will be for God to send those created in His image into a place that was created for the devil and his angels, and not mankind.

It is sort of like the cartoon of a mouse raising its middle finger to the hawk that's about to grab him. It's title is "The Last Great Act of Defiance." And essentially, that's what Satan is about, deceiving the people into doing nothing with (or acting against) Christ, and taking as many as he can with him.

Satans "mission" if you will is to take as many followers away from God and Jesus that he can. He's been a sore loser from the beginning when God casted him and his followers out of Heaven into Hell. Satan gets much pleasure in shaking the Christians faith and belief system in God. It is like he is giving himself a power trip or some kind of twisted high. That's why he does what he does.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan is in a power struggle with God. In a way, God and Satan work together, because without Satan, there would be nothing to push christians to worship and follow God, because there would be no hell. But, satan wants those souls so he can torture them. He gets joy out of others pain.

Stop and think about whether Satan exists at all. He is a myth to explain good and evil. Read all you can from various belief systems, meditate and pray in your own way. Then you will find your own truth. There is only one loving creator. Call it what you like, Great Spirit, God, Goddess. Those that teach the gospel of exclusion saying only one group will find enlightenment are, in my opinion, misled.

He doesn't want to WIN souls; He only wants to mislead us. Since he was kicked out of Heaven (Revelation 12:9 - "So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him."), he knows soon Jehovah God will chain him up during Christ's Millennial Reign. This means Satan only has a short amount of time left on earth (Revelation 12:12 - "...Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to you, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time.") Since he will eventually be destroyed and he knows he has no hope, he wants to mislead as many humans as possible so THEY cant live forever on a paradise earth either.

His goal is to put himself above God, therefore, he wants worship. Look at how he tempted Jesus. He told Jesus that he would give Him the entire world if He would only bow down before Satan. He wants worship. And all of these people who are hating the God of the Bible are giving glory to Satan -- just what Satan wants.

he is competing with Jesus, maybe he think he can do anything that Jesus does. he is a loser, he want to stole everything that Jesus have. he is jealous of Jesus and that why he want to win soul but let ME tell you something that if you don't want ugly satan to win your soul, well you should start seeking God's will for you, pray and worshipping God is the key pass from the gate of the enemy.
