Sometimes. Ive had friends go out with people on the net. It depends on how committed you can be... internet relationships can sometimes be hard to manage, but some can last for ages. It really depends on who the people are.

It apparently works well with the elderly. For the elderly. The instance I have in mind involved two older women who became best friends forever because they both loved to quilt - quilting was a shared love for both of them, and they initially met on the Internet and wrote e-mails back and forth. One woman was here in the United States (Maine, to be exact), and the other woman was living in Ireland. It got to be such a great friendship (this is a true story, by the way) that the woman in Ireland actually made a plane trip to Maine - Portland, Maine - to meet and personally speak with the other woman. They became a featured news story one evening on our local NBC affiliate, Channel 6, WCSH television, and when I saw them smiling and standing together on the television picture, they just looked like sisters who had been apart for a long time and just had had the great pleasure of being reunited once again, so yes - I believe online relationships can and do occur. If you were thinking more along the lines of romance, passion, marriage and family - well, I am hoping someone else here on Yahoo! Answers will affirm that that, too, happens, and will cite an instance of how they know it. This is sent to you with a big smile and a hug from Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A., Sunday evening at 8:50 PM. (I am 63 years old.)

I read Chris's answer to your question with great interest as I was about to detail my email friendship. I am Irish and have a great friendship with a woman who lived in Maine when we "met" via email. Maybe it's something to do with those two places lol She lives in Florida now. I have gotten to know all her kids via email and her sister and sister-in-law as well. I know for sure that we'll always be friends and , God willing, will meet one day too. So that's one kind of online relationship that certainly can work. As for a romantic relationship, which I guess is what you're really thinking of, well, maybe. But I doubt it would be very satisfactory really.

Yes as I do but make sure there a long way from you or better still in another country, that way it will stay just online and not get any further.

Yes. Can be a friend who wont judge, but will be there to talk... after all, what else can you do but talk!
PS, I have heard its safe sex as well, but not sure how it could be anything else!
