If it's free and easy that you want ( not on tight schedule ). Think i will go with user 'rain' suggestion, pop into singapore first, but only use singapore as a hub ( dont think you really want to stay in singapore too long; just a small little city ... sorry about that 'rain' ).
Depends on your interests; if thailand, malaysia and indonesia is what you are looking at; Singapore does provide good connection to many exotic desintation.
Since you never travel to asia, will strongly recommend Singapore as a stop. English widely spoken in Singapore and you will find it easier to get around and if you do intend to travel free & easy ( no fix initerary ); You might like to 1). Book a ticket from canada to singapore ( round trip), you may also like to check example canada - bali ( round trip, use singapore as a stop over), 2) get a place to stay in Singapore ( accomodation vaires from US$30 to few hundred ). 3). book the rest of the journey in singapore ( it's advisable to book in advance ). There's this singapore travel agency website that has quite a list of tour package and tickets prices http://www.airfares.com.sg ( you can use it as a guage to work out the expenses and give you sort of an idea where to go). 4) some 1 way flight more expensive 5) If you use singapore as a hub, All flight are international, thus, avoid those domestic flight. 6) visit malaysia ( via coach/ bus from singapore possible ).

Asia is a very diverse continent.
I am currently living and working in Japan and love it here. I'd say the best time to come here is in the Spring. You could see the Cherry Blossoms.
Indonesia and Thailand both have great beaches.
There are many travel agents right there in Ottawa. Check the yellow pages.

Your best bet is to go and buy a lonelyplanet book. There is also first time asia books that really helped me. If you want to go to several different places in SE Asia then you have to plan it carefully around the rainy season. I went from Beijing all the way down through Vietnam, Cambodia and out from Bangkok. But I missed the rainy season by one week every where I went. People going the opposite direction from me were getting drown by the rain. try checking out www.lonelyplanet.com
