Valid? That's a deeply philosophical question. From the point of view of generating an enormous industry, it is certainly valid as in "worth having and proliferating". In terms of it actually having happened - honestly, it barely matters at this point now, does it? The stories have become such strong, self-fulfilling prophecies now that it really does not matter whether they were authentic or just well invented. If we are looking at divine revelation, well it seems to work. If we're not, well, we have a strong case for coming down hard on self-appointed prophets, because what's put out there as a future scenario will find its facilitators, no matter whether it was sincere or not.

Official position of the Catholic Church

As with other modern miracles, Catholics are not required to believe in a miraculous origin for the events at Fatima, however the events at Fatima were officially declared "worthy of belief" by the Catholic Church on 13 October 1930.[14]

I tend to think it was a demon spirit. They come as angels of light to deceive. Of course, I wasn't there, so it is pure speculation on my part. Mary was a human, who sinned and died like the rest of us. To elevate her to any status above that is very close to idolatry.
