Cornell book of cats. It is written buy vets at Cornell University and covers alot of health info in a slightly technical way, without being hard to understand.

For a lot of info, but a very DRY and technical read, you can get a Merck Vet Manual.

People complain a lot about how expensive veterinary care is. You must know that vets have college degrees PLUS four years of veterinary training. That is the training, there is no other kind.

You would never be able to do surgery, bloodwork, even suturing without anestesia which you can't administer.

You don't have to run to a vet for everything and there are many excellent books on cat care, both allopathically and holistically. You must not "play around" with any human meds -- painkillers, ointments etc. because many of these can kill a cat.

Shelters can always use volunteers to help with their animal populations. I have spent ten years volunteering, cleaning cages and taking care of basic cat needs. I also got training as a cat behaviorist and adoption counselor. I also learned about cat health and how those problems can be treated.

May I commend you on your life choice of helping humans!

Merck Vet Manual - very technical so buy a Taber's Medical Dictionary to go along with it.

There was a book called the Complete Cat Care Book (I don't know if it is still in print). It was a great book and non-technical.

BTW -there are loads of veterinary medicine websites. Most of the vet schools have one and you can read published articles on-line.
