Others have correctly pointed out that there is no crisis in Syria. In any case, citizens who elect to visit countries with travel advisories will do so at their own risk. There is usually a repatriation charge of about $1500 when the US Embassy is forced to help those who caught up in conflicts. If you opt to travel in worrying countries, why would you expect to be transported out for free at the expense of the taxpayers who opt to follow travel advice? You can check the current US travel advisories at:

Meanwhile, you may want to think about why your daughter is in the middle east without institutional support? If she is working for an international organization, they should have repatriation plans in case of problems - she should check this out if she is worried or check into her own personal travel insurance. We all have to have a little responsibility for ourselves.

Tahini is absolutely right about everything.

Syria is not being evacuated. If you want her to go home, send her a ticket.

Congress has never given the State Department funds to provide free transportation for indigent Americans. They have to pay their own way. What the embassy will do is help her contact family and friends to borrow money, but apparently she is already in contact with you, so the embassy has no role in whether or not she goes home.

For the same reason I was not sent home from Greece during the war in Kosovo. There was no war in Greece.

Your daughter can leave Syria whenever she likes. She doesn't need the US government to assist her unless she has broken a Syrian law. Or has she been kidnapped? I hope not.

There may be technical and legal reasons of all sorts. For one, the embassy is not a goodwill airline who flies home anyone who thinks they'd rather leave the area. After all, Syria is not a war zone. Lebanon is. If she were there, they'd evacuate her to safety - which may or may not be the US, depending on availability of means.

one of the reasons we have embassies and consulate offices not to mention website is to keep informed, have you given some thought that your daughter is not interested in coming home for whatever reason i believe one of the most important things to do as an American in foreign soil is to register with the embassy in the eventuality of problems our Gov will not abandon any American at whatever the cost
