In the 1920s or 1930s, would an Italian, British, or Polish Jewish person know Yiddish, Hebrew, or would it depend on which type of Jew they were, for example, Ashkenazi? Thank you for any and all help.

As far as I know most Jews of Poland spoke Yiddish. Hebrew was taught together with old religious texts, but only rabbi knew it well. I think each Jewish minority spoke certain language depending on its history, relocations; e.g., that could be a mix of some Spanish dialect mixed with Slavic language; some groups assimilated fully culturally, some only linguistically.

As far as I know, no one actively spoke Hebrew before the creation of Israel (although they may have had a working knowledge for liturgical reasons like Christians knowing Latin).

In Poland they would certainly have spoken Yiddish. In the other two countries, I'm actually not sure, but you could make a good bet to say that British Jews spoke English and Italian Jews spoke Italian.

In Turkey, they spoke Spanish (Ladino). Odd, eh?
