The most famous, old fashioned circus that tours around the USA is Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey. (They have merged.)
Another newer circus that only uses humans for all of its acts, not animals, is called Le Cirque du Soleil (circus of the sun). It is kind of like a beautiful ballet set to exciting music, full of colors and shapes.
I think that Le Cirque is the best and most ethical way to experience the excitement of a circus, since all of the performers are there because they want to be there, unlike the animals who are kept locked up, many times are mistreated, and are forced to perform against their will. Plus, it doesn't have an awful smell like an animal circus does.

I used to watch Billy Smart's when I was a child.
My boyfriend used to be a clown in "Burlesque"
Cirque du Soleil is cool.
