they are brown/red in color and he complains it hurts when I comb his hair. It will go away temporarily when I wash his hair with dandruff shampoo (pyrithizone zinc) but is usually back the next morning. He has been diagnosed with exczema, but only has it occasionaly, it is not severe. Could these scales on his head be exczema, psoriasis or are they simply just dandruff?
Thanks!

These scales could be any number of things...eczema and a fungal infection (like ringworm, or candida) are the first two things that come to mind. Psoriasis usually causes thick silvery colored patches, not brown/red.

If it is eczema, he may need steroid creams and medicated shampoo like Neutrogena T-Gel to help control it.

If it's a fungal infection, he will need anti-fungal medication to treat it.

I suggest you take him in to see his doctor for evaluation since this seems to be an ongoing problem that has not been evaluated.

It sounds like psoriasis I'd take him to his pediatrician and see if they can give him something. There is cream for adults that have a hormone in it that helps with the pain and swelling, so I'm sure they'd have something for him. Good Luck

It could be psoriasis BUT you have to check his body for lesion like that. Because Posiariasis tends to start at the upper extremities befor the head.Hope this helps. God bless!

I would get him started on Shaklee's Optiflora. This two-product system includes Probiotic (Bifidus & Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora). Patented guaranteed delivery of 500 million microflora to intestines. It's amazing how what's going on inside us cause things to manifest themselves to the outside - like eczema, psoriasis, acne, etc.

Also, I would apply Small Wonder Creamy Baby Oil to the spots and I think you'll get rid of it.

This has helped many other infants and children with this type of condition.

Presuming the Pediatrician gives him a clean bill of heath, you could try dabbing olive oil on the spot after you shampoo. I think I would change to a heath store brand of shampoo. Change shampoo every day...I keep four different brands for myself and use them one thru' four and start over. Used to have LOTS of trouble until I did this. There is a lot to be alergic to these days.

Sounds like ezcema. A book I read recently indicates that ezcema, and other skin disorders may be the result of a Candida albicans infestation (yeast).

You may want to check out www.hufa.org, and click on the yeast link, to see what that is all about.
