i love switzerland. i went for a couple days in march this year, but loved it so much that i went back for another 2 weeks in june. it's really a great country... you have all the material things you could want, amazing chocolate, great people, great food, fantastic transportation (SBB and mountain trains/cable cars/funiculars), and you won't find the kind of scenery that switzerland has to offer anywhere else. in general, the whole country is worth visiting, though most people concentrate on zermatt, jungfrau region, geneva/lausanne, luzern, etc. personally, i found the best places to be those that didn't see as many tourists (like Thun, Zug, Vevey, Martigny, Brig); the locals were much more friendly, eager to help, and engage in conversation with the visitors. the really touristy areas (grindelwald, luzern, etc), i didn't like so much... not only were there lots of tourists (so it's crowded), but some of the people working in the tourist industry weren't so pleasant (keep in mind that this is just my own sweeping generalization -- and it's definitely not true with everyone i met). if you go, i'd definitely recommend a few days living in the mountain towns, because it's a very special and relaxing experience even if you're not into hiking (which i'm not). people will tell you that switzerland is expensive, but i think it depends on you; coming from nyc, i didn't think it was such a big difference, but it can be a pricey place to visit. unless you're the club-going, party-crazy kind of person (you might be limited only to zurich and geneva), you'll love switzerland too (most people who visit do).

Well I'm not an american...but I still have my opinion.
I have been to Switzerland twice and think it is breathtakingly picture postcard beautiful.
It is difficult to recommend places to see because there is so much!
Lucerne is a lovely little city built by a huge lake, with mountains all around. There are so many nice areas of Switzerland, its hard to mention just a few.
There are endless mountains to visit and lakes to see...Zermatt is nice (The Matterhorn) and a number of spectacular train journies through tunnels and mountains.
I would suggest you do some research or grab a good book (Lonely Planet book of Switzerland is very informative)
Train travel can be costly, so buy a train pass of some sort...

I loved Switerland. It has been years since I went but I enjoyed it. I was in Geneva and in the mountains. I thought the mountains were some of the most beautiful that I've ever seen. Geneva is a great modern European city. The people are smart and kind too.
