That sounds like a bad habit there are a lot of people that does that It seems that if you have a check in your hand then you have money but as you know that is not true. And overdraft fees cost even more money. If you cant resist writing bad checks I would suggest closing your bank account, destroying all remaining checks you have and keeping your money in a safe place at your house. This may sound strange but but your cash in a mason jar and put it in the freezer, that way if there is a fire, it is unlikely to be destroyed. Then you can only spend what you have and will not have any checks laying around to tempt you. Hope this helped you.

It is likely that you are "confident" on a subconscious level and believe you will pay for the items "eventually". Perhaps it's a habit, perhaps it's poor planning, either way you've found a way to rationalize to yourself why it's okay to fail.
Many banks will offer overdraft protection if you set up a savings account as your safety net. Even someone with bad spending habits shouldn't be having checks bounce.
1)From your paycheck, deduct up to 20% (if you can afford it) to go directly into this savings account.
2)Close all current checking accounts and destroy old checkbooks you haven't used.
3)Do NOT get a debit card - if you have one, cancel it with your bank and shred it.
4)Do NOT start using a credit card instead of writing checks. If you can't maintain a balance in your checking account, it will be that much harder to pay off your credit card balance each month.
5)Begin to use cash more and more.
6)Open a new checking account, combined with a savings account. Start with a very low balance, just above minimum balance.
7)Write down everything you use checks for and see how many of these you can move into a cash only basis.

This isn't a willpower thing, you're not doomed forever. You're possibly a visual person, you see your checkbook and think you have the money. Begin to think differently about checks, they are not the same as cash and you can become solvent again.
Good luck....

It is addicting because you are getting the instant gratification of a thing, knowing that you don't have to really pay for it right now. It is kind of like a credit card for you. You know that if you wait long enough, the store will forward your check to the DA and you will have a month to pay the DA. So, you are getting the thing (s) you want NOW and paying for them 2-3 months from now, depending on how long your store take to send the check through the legal system.

What you are doing is illegal, and you can very easily go to jail over this. It is also embarrassing when you see your checks posted in the store with "do not accept checks from this person" stamped on them. You can find the help you need here:

American Consumer Credit Counseling's confidential debt management program. It is individually designed to provide consumers with a unique solution for their financial situation. Professionally trained and independently certified counselors evaluate a consumer's financial situation, assist in creating a budget, work with creditors and provide education so that they can properly manage their finances and secure a debt-free future.

They have course specifically for people in your circumstance. I urge you to go there immediately, and good luck to you, dear.

I really would suggest you get out of the habit. Writing checks , knowing you have no funds in you bank account is fraud. You can go to jail, I know some one who did. I am guessing that when you write bad checks you write them near your pay date. When you do get paid you just able to have just enough funds to cover the check the 2nd or 3rd time it is resubmitted to your bank.Have you stop to think that maybe you would have enough money in your account if you stop accruing insufficient fund /overdraft fees.

It's not a habit or anything , you just need more funds in your bank account to cover the checks . As simple as that .

I used to have that problem. It is so easy to do it because you can write and write and it takes days for it to go through. What I did was give my check book and my debit card to my boyfriend. So I won't spend money I do not have. When I needed money, he would ask what for...bills, gas, food, or something I really needed. I saved so much money that way. And it helped me build a budget.

You're an idiot. That costs you a lot of money.

Stop using checks and use your debit card for everything, including paying your bills. Take your checks to the bank and have them shredded. Get counter checks to pay your bills (you can't use them at stores).

There are tons of consumer counseling organizations that can help you with your finances. Teach you how to manage, set a budget, work on improving you credit. Find what that will give you references and check the BBB on them to make sure they are legit.

I have no idea why you would find it addicting.

Your best bet would probably be to close your bank account and deal strictly in cash. Use money orders when needed.
