Got news for you... spy bot from downloads.com still free to download, but now $34.95 if you want it to fix any problems. same has been true for all the free downloads. tell you about the problems they find, then want cash to fix it. my limited fixed income can no longer afford the costs involved at staying on line. i thank everyone for your kindness and for sharing your knowledge. i wish i could give you all best answer points. i am signing out for the last time and pulling the plug on my intrenet service. it was an expence some of us seniors on a fixed income could do without. guess it was my last window to the changing world we live in today. thank you all and god bless. good bye.

Have not found in my experience, Spybot requesting money to fix problem. You may have downloaded a look alike or infected product. below, i have listed a number of products, all with very good links. Also you may wish to consider using Firefox as your browser. http://www.mozilla.org

Antiviral. (free)

AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com

Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.

Anti-spyware (all free)

Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com

Spybot SD http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

Spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.

Spycatcher

PC starter kit at download.com 20 of the best recommended programes for people new or less advanced in computers. Check all three pages, at bottom see Security/Tools/Fun

http://www.download.com/PC-Starter-Kit/2001-12350_4-0.html?tag=dir

C Cleaner.http://www.ccleaner.com/

This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.

1) Where did you download Spybot from--Spybot is a free program

2) Are you using a firewall (besides the XP firewall)?

3) If after running your antivirus and the anti-spyware programs you still have this problem, you can go to pestscan.com and have your computer scanned (free). They provide a list and location of malware. You can use this list to manually delete it.

Spybot does NOT charge you to fix the problem of spyware or adware. You had probably downloaded a ripped, and most likely virus infected version of Spybot. Download it from download.com and update it. After updated, start your computer in safe mode.

windows 98 - start - shut down - restart in safe mode
windows xp - start - run - msconfig - select diagnostics mode - restart -

Clean your computer from safe mode.

If it is a pop-up then it too is adware. Note that most of the programs you named will not stop you from getting this garbage, only assist in removing it but you must keep the programs up to date and must run them.

If they are internet pop ups, ignore them. It's just some company trying to get you to purchase their products. Copy the website address and put it in your block list on your firewall. Oh and see if your start page has changed under internet options.
