The old school manners say you would be taking away from the bride to wear white to a wedding if you are not the bride.
The new school says you can. This is a wedding, there will be older people there. Even if you know the bride could care less what you wear, her family will. Question is, would you care if the family thinks you are deliberately trying to shame the bride? Would you want to take the risk that people might whisper and point at you? This is not the day to upstage the bride, do it some other time.
Old school manners say not to wear black to a wedding, but some people do. Unless the bridesmaids are wearing black, and the bride asks the guests to, also, I would not do that, either. Who wants to be the black cloud at a wedding? Some people think it is unlucky for the bride and groom for someone to show up in black.
I am sorry to have to ask, but is money the problem? You can't afford a new dress? Then, I guess you will have to wear what you have, and if the bride is a close friend, she probably already understands. Maybe you could try to wear something colorful with it.
Good luck, go and have a good time at the wedding.

Never mind what TV shows tell you, you don't wear white after Labor Day, and you NEVER wear white to a wedding, unless you are the bride.
...Oh, why am I bothering? Everyone thinks he is so unique, so special, and his circumstances so much more important than any other consideration, that everyone now wears whatever falls out of his closet, without regard to anything or anybody else.

Whoa! Hold your horses! It's never okay to wear white to a wedding (unless of course, you are the bride).
But generally, you cannot wear white after Labour Day, so unless this wedding is before the 4th, try going with one of the myriad of other colours available to you.

Technically, you aren't suppose to wear white at all.... etiquette books say it takes away from the bride and makes it look like you are trying to upstage. As for the month, yeah, that whole white after labor day thing has been thrown out the window (According to What Not to Wear) :)

No, and the time of year doesn't matter. You're not supposed to be competing with the bride, so you should wear white or off-white, or similar light all one color dresses.
