Even if I get 9 hours of sleep I'm tired, if I get 6 hours of sleep I'm tired. I get 12 hours of sleep I get tired, no matter what I'm tired. But yet I can't fall asleep, it takes me almost 2 hours to fall asleep. Why am I always so tired yet when I try to sleep I can't for a long time? Even if I've been deprived of sleep for 18-24 hour?

Try to eat foods rich in iron, many people think that only women need iron but men need a lot of iron too. Pasta is a great source of iron. As for going to sleep...some of us have to try harder than others....have a bedtime routine...stick to it...go to bed earlier and read for a while...whatever you want.Monitor your caffeine intake. Eat a banana before bed that always knocks me out...warm milk works too. Don't exercise (work out) less than three hours before bed.

I have the good fortune of living near a university that has a specialty sleep clinic. I had similar problems (long time to get to sleep, wake up frequently, no sense of renewal after sleeping) and I found the doctor very helpful.

He explained that I was sleeping too much. I don't know if this is your problem, it sounds like you have irregular sleep lengths, but for me, I was regularly sleeping 9-12 hours a night, for years. This actually caused my sleep quality to be compromised. He suggested I sleep no more than 7 hours every night, and that has helped a lot. Also, he said it is not so important to go to bed the same time every night, but it is very important to get up at the same time every day, to establish a good sleep habit.

I am hardly an expert, but I wanted to pass on what was said to me. Find a sleep doctor!

Also, if you do shift work, that can REALLY mess you up.

part of your problem could be stress, or even just the lack of a regular sleep pattern (try going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time all week). If that's not the case, head to your doc for a thyroid check, low thyroid hormone can cause tiredness, appetite changes and weight gain.
