Some children's speak develops later than others. As long as he can mumble a few things then he is within the normal range and the speaking will come with time.

Definitely agree with many people on here but just want to add another possibility...make sure they screen for autism as well. It's a diagnosis that doesn't get nearly enough attention as it should and many times gets misdiagnosed as the child "just being behind a bit socially". Not trying to frighten you or jump the gun, just giving you something else to consider if all the other testing that everyone has suggested doesn't give you the answers your friend is looking for.

My best friend does home therapy with autistic children and she is always talking about how little people know about it and had the parents forced doctors to evaluate their child for it in the first place then it could have been treated much quicker. You see, it is imperative for children with autism to start therapy immediately, especially in their younger years, otherwise they regress to the point to where vocal skills may not be able to be developed.

So time is of the essence, have your friend get him checked for the basics and if they're stumped...have him evaluated for autism!

okay well i just went through parenting classes and there were other people in the class that had been through the some thing. The teacher said that some children just learn in different areas faster than others. Like sometimes they will learn more physical things before they learn how to talk. And some will learn how to talk and stuff before they can walk. One womans child could walk at a year but did not start talking well till after she was two. But other times it could be a medical problem as well. This one woman just thought her child was slow but it turned out he was deaf. So if you are really concerned you should problem asked your childs physician.

My daughter turned 2 two weeks ago and she NEVER shuts up.... she can even say like little sentances like "mama quit cryin" when I whine and "sassy did it" to the puppy many things. Yet my ex-boyfriends son will be 2 in October and will almost never say a word and if he does I don't know what it is. The doctor said he will have to go to a speech therapist if he doesn't start talking soon so I would check with a doctor on this.

Does he have older siblings or do his parents give him what he wants as soon as he mumbles? A lot of kids in those situations do talk later because they get what they want without talking. They have no reason to talk. They will eventually decide to but if he has someone else they can encourage speech by saying oh?you want the cookie? try and get him to say the words of what he wants.

Can you understand the mumbling? By two, he should be saying much more than one word. By 3 years, people who are close to him (family and family friends who see him often) should be able to understand nearly 50% of what he says. Your friend needs to have him evaluated by a speech/language professional. I work at a preschool for children with disabilities, and most of our children come with a diagnosis of speech or language impairment. I teach in the two-year-old classroom, and several of our children come to us without speaking a single intelligible word. Your friend needs to take her son to his pediatrician who (hopefully) will be able to direct her to the school district in her area to have her son's speech and language evaluated. She should do this as soon as possible to be able to start intervention. Look for a preschool or other service in her area that specializes in children under 5 with a speech or language disfunction. Children under 3 with a diagnosed speech delay will be able to receive speech therapy for free... it is part of federal guaranteed rights under a law called IDEA. It may be a hearing issue... he may not be able to hear speech sounds. A speech/language pathologist will be able to pinpoint whether the problem is physical (hearing, blockage) or cognitive (brain processing problem) and recommend a course of action. The sooner the child starts intervention, the better. The age from 18 months to 30 months is the "language explosion" period for toddlers, and he should be picking up words at a rate of 1-5 new words per day. Please tell your friend not to delay... it is important to have her son evaluated and see what can be done to build his language skills. Good luck!

No, even at the same time as human beings yawn i do not. i choose to play a pastime with my friends the position someone will yawn and we referred to who yawns first. I under no circumstances frequently win except i'm ill with a chilly because i'm getting so drained it is as if I stayed up an entire week with a wink of sleep.
