During July and August, you'll find that many European shops close. That is why you should visit during spring (May and early June). You can still do all of the typical tourist stuff, and it is the best season to see people happy and about. You can ride in a gondola, and you can see the most beautiful flowers you've ever seen. It is a great time to experience the culture.

I just returned from Italy yesterday. It was my first visit and one I will not regret. Italy is absolutely beautiful!!! So rich with history, and the shopping and food is great too :) It was VERY HOT, and there were a lot of tourists. A lot of the locals I met said that the fall is a great time to visit because the weather is just perfect. I think there are tourists there all the time. I'm not sure when businesses close, but I am guessing maybe during religious holidays, such as Good Friday, Easter, etc. They are very religious. I found many stores were closed on Sunday as that is a day of rest.

August is when many Italians go on vacation. It is also one of the hottest months in Italy. Tourist season is considered June through September. I went May through June, and it was just getting very crowded. However, the temperatures were, for the most part, nice.

I would not recommend visiting Venice during rainy season. It is prone to flooding. Otherwise, there is no wrong time to visit Italy outside of tourist season. :)

out of all the people on this page that are just guessing i know cause i go every year there are tourists all year round so there is no getting away from that but the best time to stay is in the summer trust me the best place to stay is also the most expensive place but worth it is Sperlonga very near Gaeta the town is so rich in culture and great great places to eat(except hotel aurora the prices are rediculous) but they have concerts every night and it is nice and cool there because it is right next to the beach and there are some b-e-a-utiful sights.i stayed a week in a six bed three roomwith a nice patch of land that if you take this one picture it is absolutly perfect all for 1000 euro. also the time almost all the shops close is in july and august because people usually get one month off in Italy.

I went to Italy in April and it was like perfect weather. It was not hot and it was not cold. The daytime temperature for us was usually about 70. I was in Vactican City(St. Peter's Basilica) for the Easter Service in year 2000. (Not catholic either lol) But I do think early spring would be the best time to go to Italy because the weather for us was fantastic and made it comfortable for all the walking you have to do.

Anytime. Do it while you still can. You never know when you might get sick or worse. Just do it.
