We took our puppies for the first time to a new dog park and we were walking them when I saw my pup reach and eat something, well I immediately opened her mouth and it was it had already melted, but I knew it was chocolate, and I tried to get as much out of her mouth as I could. I could tell there was already some in the back of her throat and melted into her tongue, but now I am worried because of all that I have heard about chocolate. I don't know what kind of chocolate it was, I'm sure it was a piece of candy that some stupid kid dropped! She is not throwing up or acting different, and i will watch her, but Can anyone give me advice? My vet isn't available until tomorrow. Thank you

Hon, dont let it spaz you out. Nothing bad is gonna happen to your sweet little puppy. My dog eats chocolate every time I do and he's fine. Small doses wont hurt at all. It's when they get ahold of alot that it gets ugly. She'll be fine. Best wishes!!

The chocolate in the average candy bar will not necessarily kill a dog. The deciding factors are the purity of the chocolate and the size and age of the dog. Big dogs obviously can tolerate much more than a small dog, and an older dog can handle more than a puppy. The average candy bar is MILK chocolate, which is diluted. If your dog ate BAKERS chocolate, then I'd really worry because it is a more pure form than a candy bar. I'm sure since it was a candy bar and it must have been a small piece, she will be OK. Also, never feed a dog onions or give it Tylenol, they can also be deadly.

Chocolate is only toxic to a dog if the dog consumes more than an ounce per pound of the dog's body weight. Example a 16 lbs dog could eat up to a pound of chocolate. Hope this helps some.

Chocolate is the worst thing a dog can eat. When my dog ate chocolate, she kept throwing up, so you should get her to a vet. With an IV and a trained vetanarian, she'll be fine. That happened to my dog, about a 2 years ago, and she is healthy and living now.

If it was a small amount like a part of a cookie or a piece of candy it should be ok. Larger amounts can be dangerous. Watch the puppy for any changes and then when the Vet returns let them know. Good luck. It'll be ok.

It takes a large amount of chocolate to kill a dog. A small piece of candy he found on accident shouldn't hurt him. Call your vet for reassurance. They won't want you to come in, they'll just talk to you. It'll be ok.

Edit:
I know how you feel, my dog swallowed an entire bar of soap once - whole. I was terrified. The vet reassured me by phone and told me what to watch for and he ended up fine. Puppies will eat anything.

It's okay. You are not supposed to give a dog chocolate, but if he eats a small amount it will usually be ok. If it were a large amount like a whole bag, then you would have to get to a vet in a hurry. Keep an eye on him anyway but you should be ok.

Honey don't worry about it. Chocolate is only toxic to dogs in large amounts, the same as it is to people. What little bit she ate won't do anything. I give my dogs chocolate all the time, just not in large amounts and they are fine.

As long as it wasn't a lot of chocolate, your dog will be fine. But if it was a lot, get your phone book out and call an emergency vet. They will tell you what to do.
