Walking will do both. You have to walk a good pace and not just shuffle along.

The only way walking will cause you to lose weight is if you participate in a sport called "speed walking" , Otherwise, your heart rate won't reach and maintain a level where you begin to lose weight.
Your heart rate must reach a certain level and be maintained for about 30 minutes or more before you burn any calories.
The formula:
220 - age = MAX heart rate
for a 20 year old, the formula would look like this:
(220-20=200 MHR)
60% - 80% of this max
To calculate your heart rate:
1. Find your pulse (on the neck or wrist) and count the number
of beats for 6 seconds.
2. Multiply that number by 10 and compare to your recommended range.
Using this method will prevent you from stopping exercise for more than a few seconds. You can take your pulse after you've been exercising for at least 5 minutes.
But do not be discouraged, walking is still heathly and does keep your "juices flowin' "
Hope this helps :)

Walking does both to a degree. You do need to walk for half an hour, at least 3 times a week, at a fast pace that gets your heart working. For the best results in both weight loss and toning, join a gym and get on a cardio and weight training program. It's done wonders for me, but you have to stick at it and combine it with sensible food choices.

i went on a diet and my Dr told me to walk at least 20 min. a day. I did this for a while along with 1000 calorie diet and 20 grams of fat a day and I lost 17 pounds in 6 weeks. I have gotten off the calorie counting diet for 4 weeks and have not gained a pound. But i do watch watch what I eat. And you do have to walk a very fast pace. It will tone but it takes a long time to see results from walking.

Walking a quick pace will help you lose weight. A normal to slow pace will not do anything. Walk up hills and steps if you have access or on a treadmill with an incline set. and you must burn enough calories while walking to lose wieght so don't over eat.

Depends on how strenous the walk is, hiking vs. walking, how long you do it and how quick your pace is power walking vs. walking. You might find that going up that steep hill that is just down the road, and picking up the pace for an hour gives you more rewards than a leisurely stroll around the block.

it doesn't do anything at all. Walking doesn't get your heartrate high enough to do any real exercise.
