It is made from the root of the sassafras's tree. Thus, used to be called "Sarsaparilla". The Beer part comes from the fact that it was served in saloons, and younger people, kids, and women, would order it. The word developed into Sarsaparilla Beer. Since Sarsaparilla came from the root of the Sassafras Tree, it evolved into "Root" Beer" and was served in saloons as beer was.

It's made out of a plant that resembles a root. But today's rootbeer is made out of high-fructose corn syrup, water, and wintergreen flavoring (which by the way is made from the reaction between hydrochloric acid and motor oil).

The flavoring comes from the root of the sassafras tree or the sarsaparilla vine. Originally, the root was brewed like a tea to make an extract, but now it is much easier to buy the extract ready-made.

Most historians believe that the invention of an actual root beer recipe happened by pure accident, thanks in part to an inventive pharmacist, eager to create a miracle drug. Though people had been drinking an herbal home brewed variety for years, root beer was still just an experiment for the creative and inventive. In 1870, an unknown pharmacist toying with a handful of roots, berries and herbs, came up with a recipe for root beer which consisted of juniper, wintergreen, spikenard, pipsissewa, sarsaparilla, vanilla beans, hops, dog grass, birch bark and licorice. The original drink was quite medicinal in nature, tasting both bitter and sweet. Even though the pharmacist offered the drink to the public as a cure-all, it was never marketed or well-received.

Sassafras root - the 'root' of the root beer flavor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Root beer is a fermented beverage made from a combination of vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, sassafras root bark, nutmeg, anise, and molasses among other ingredients. Many local brands of root beer exist, and homemade root beer is made from concentrate or (rarely) from actual roots. Like alcoholic beer, root beer has a thick and foamy head when poured.

Root beer is a uniquely North American beverage, constituting about 3% of the American soft drink market.

If your looking for a history lesson, can't help you. I know when I was a kid we would go to my Great Grand mothers ranch and there they had persimmon trees and Sassafras trees. We called the Sassafras trees root beer trees. We would chew on the roots and I swear it tasted like root beer.
