Rotties can be very sweet, but if you are not experienced in training dogs, DO NOT get a Rottweiler. They are incredibly smart, and I know that sounds wonderful, but if you don't know what you're doing you will end up with a pet you don't like that chews up your house and/or is agressive to family members.
I am a big fan of Australian Shepherds, but they are another breed of intelligent dog that you have to work hard with (though not as hard as a Rottie) They have good temperment though and are just plain adorable.
Golden Retrievers are not the most protective of dogs, but they are easy to train. Just realize that the puppy you get will weigh somewhere over 100 pounds when it grows up. They are very loyal and sweet though.
Also, I wouldn't get a German Shepherd if you don't know what you're doing. They are another breed that you have to work very hard with.
Are you looking for a guard dog or just a companion dog? There are lots of breeds out there, and depending on your experience/purpose there are lots of breeds that you would do well with.
If you're getting a rescue dog, almost every breed has a rescue organization associated with it.

I looove rottweilers, they are my favorite, but my suggestion would actualy be a german shepard. They are very smart, very protective, and very easily trained. Some rotts can be a bit over protective, although mine wasen't. All dogs have their own personalities and it has alot to do with how they are trained and treated. If you are going for a rescue (kudos to you) you will probley end up with a mix. I currently has a mix and he is the best dog I have ever owned even though he is a bit aggressive with other people sometimes. Good luck to you and good for you getting a rescue.

Rotties are great dogs, very protective but good with kids, but I have a lab-mastiff mix that is both protective and gets along with other dogs. I would go to the pound in your area and pick out whatever dog's personality seems most compatible with yours. Also, getting a puppy and socializing it around people and other animals is always a good idea, because that way you have some impact on the formation of its personality.

Rottweilers can turn mean for no reason and be vicious. If you want a good dog that is protective I would go with Bull Mastiff they are the best for that. We have two in the family and they are the best family and protective dogs there are. We all love them very much. My brother in law has them.

What about a German Shepard? I like labs even though they are not as protective as German shepards. Rottweilers have been known to turn on their owners so I would be careful. If a dog has been abused, I would think twice about getting it. Try to find out some history on the dog if possible.

Rottweilers are one of the meanest breeds of dogs. If you're thinking about nice dogs, definitely don't get a rottweiler. Try a golden retriever maybe.

Maybe a German Shepherd?
Golden Retrievers are great dogs. They are very friendly.
And not all Rottweilers are mean. It all depends on the owners and the dog's training. Rottweilers can be very sweet and gentle dogs if properly trained.

Rotty's are good only with other rotty's. try a German Shephard. Basically go to the pounds and talk to the handlers about the dogs personality. You can take your dog with you and let the ones you are interested in play with them. You will find the perfect dog for you just by keeping your eyes and heart open. Plus if it does not work out they will take the dog back and give you a refund!

Lab or a Golden Retriever, but check the the people out before you get the dog, cuz i got a lab, and it's a kind called a Kurr dog, where it only protects you, and will attack anyone else.

Try a bulldog or something big, yet friendly.
I think a rottweiler can get little too protective.
