Hilo is mellow, great chinese restauraunts & tidepools, can drive to South Point & City of Refuge easily, couple hrs.Waimea, up in the mountains, beatiful, great restaraunts, cool & wet, 2000 ft. Kona, sea level on the ocean like any other port city, like lahaina, pARTY cENTRAL.

The big tourist resorts are on the West side, north of Kailua-Kona. My favorite part is the East side around Hilo - there are some nice bed and breakfasts on that side.

If I were going for the first time, I would book some time on both sides. The beaches are better on the West (check out Hapuna Beach) but the volcanoes and Waipio Valley and all the stuff in and around Hilo make for a long day if you are traveling from the West side.
