This is what you should be able to do before you leave for boot camp, basic training, etc:

Be able to recite everything verbatim that is in the manual your recruiter gives you (rank, General Orders, etc...)

Be able to road march at a 4 mile an hour pace for up to 18 miles carrying at least 35 pounds (easier said than done, especially if you're not used to it).

Maintain a 7 minute mile run for up to 5 miles.

Score 80% in each event on the physical fitness test, depending on what branch you eventually decide to go to.

It takes a while for most to get this physically fit, because road marching is not something teenagers do, but if you do, you'll be ahead of everyone, and you won't be sucking as bad as everyone else.

Not being at this level of physical fitness does not mean you won't graduate. It just means life will be harder for you.

Build yourself up by using alternating speed and distance workouts for road marches and runs. I hate road marches, but they would have been a lot easier if I had prepared for them. I was not used to walking when I joined, and I walked almost 37 miles total in the last 3 days before I graduated.

If you can achieve this standard BEFORE you go, you will be prepared for any school you are scheduled to attend, whether it be boot camp, RIP, Navy Seal, Combat Controller, etc.. good luck.

PS If you end up going Air Force, Coast Guard, or Navy, don't worry about road marching. The Army and Marines like to walk.

First off, you need to be able to run a 6 minute mile. In order to be able to run 1 mile in 6 minutes work up your body to be able to run 3 in good time with out stopping. Also, you need to work on your pushups - massive amounts; sit ups and PULL UPS... no one here really mentioned that. You have to be able to do pull ups. Dont worry too much though; I have seen soldiers come into training in the worst shape and by the time they leave they are wonderfully conditioned. It'll just take time, discipline and patience. GOOD LUCK!

I am the wife of a Marine who recently got done with recruiting duty so I hope you take my advise: RUN RUN and RUN! This will get you into shape and ready for what's ahead.

My 17 year old is taking Brazilian Ju-Jitsu - he has dropped the weight off and is learning a very specialized martial art also. He runs on the days he doesn't take his classes, which are Mon, Wed and Friday and walks on the treadmill. He is very fit and he also watches what he eats. Hope this helps!

RUN, pusups, run pushups, then have your little brother stand on your back then run and do pushups. Marines might not be the brightest crayons in the box, but they are badasses- get in the best shape possible

Try to jog at least a mile a day, try to get in a half hour of calistenics <---sp? Lots of push-ups and sit-ups. But I wouldn't worry too much, if your not the picture of fitness when you arrive, you soon will be :)
