I've heard that some buddhists take vows of silence that can last years, and I don't understand how they could do it. People say I'm quiet, but I have a strong need to express myself when I have a pressing thought. A vow of silence might drive me crazy.

Satan would love for us to be silent - or hermits.
Anything to keep the gospel from being preached or prevent one from receiving the Holy Ghost - the "down payment" for those who are born again.

Back in high school I used to tell jokes all the time to the point where my friends couldn't stand it, so they made me a bet, which I lost, and they made me shut up for a whole lunch period. That experience changed me forever, because I found it was so good not to have to think of jokes to tell that I stopped telling jokes (habitually, I mean) from that day forward.

Vows of self-deprivation are geared toward showing a person how life would be like without something which that person normally considers "essential". Sometimes we develop habits (like talking too much) that we would drop if we only knew what a burden these habits really were, and taking vows to give up these things for a time (i.e., fasting from these things) give us the opportunity to determine just how badly we really need them in our lives.

My husband would love it! Seriously though I couldn't do it. I am way too opinionated to even think about it and I feel as if I would lose part of who I am. I've worked too hard to become the kind of person I am to willingly change.

I could never do it. I can't stop talking long enough to sit through church.
