"Las Meninas" were not political or social commentary. They are portraits of the court of King Philip IV. Velazquez was commissioned to paint the Dwarfs, and of these essays he remained loyal to paint, and loyal to the court.
Political use would be a poor choice of words to describe Velazquez essays of the meninas/ dwarfs. It is admiration of art, and painted in the 1600's, and are still considered an inspiration in the schools of modern art.
