Teen depression and suicide are very real problems. Be thankful your parents care enough to be concerned and watch for symptoms...many don't.

Parents don't always know how to talk and address issues with their kids, especially when the kids get defensive and aggrivated and start in with the "it's not fair" act. I'm sure kids that are living in the war zones over in the middle east would change places with you in a heart beat. Life's not fair...be thankful one of your biggest injustices is not being allowed to wear black nail polish.

If you want your parents to have respect for you, then you need to earn it. Complaining about them not being fair and their reasoning being "stupid" isn't going to help you succeed in that regard. Try having a responsible conversation with them, explaining why you feel you should be able to wear it. Make them/her understand that it's not about death but about self expression.

I'm only 25, don't have much experience raising teens. But I lived in a foster home and witnessed first hand how they behave. The ones that could speak and act maturly got treated with respect, much quicker than ones that b*tched about how unfairly they were being treated all the time.

Old people are often superstitious, My Grandfather had something against all kinds of cards: pokemon cards, baseball cards because he felt they were associated with gambling of which he vehemently dissaproved and that there was a devil on the back of everyone - they would not let me where anything around my neck because it looked like a noose and they thought it tempted death - they would not let me cover my face with a shawl even if i was playing cops and robbers because they felt it was like covering the head of a prisoner on death row - they have values and superstitions and automatically expect you to share their beliefs - because older people are set in their ways and are extremely resiliant to change -

In one country pepsi lost its entire market because they changed the colour of their machines to a colour that signified death, a woman cried when a man left flowers on her doorstep as an act of love, but to her it meant that someone had died - people of differnt walks of life have different beliefs and etiquettes that need to be taken into consideration - A firm handshake is considered good here in England and eye contact shows you are confident and attentive - in Japan both of those signs are a sign of agression - So you see your parents just expect you to conform to their beliefs and will not be swayed -

They sometimes don't know why themselves they have simply been brought up that way - and so 'thats how it is' -

I'll give you the advice I personally follow myself and give all other people in your position : You do not have to believe what your parents believe, I Don't, its good to be different, you can be however you want to be - but as long as you live with them and are legally and financially dependent on them they can tell you what to do - 'Wait till you're 18 - then do what ever the hell you like' :) - hope that helps, peace.

That's kinda what my parents did once, except it was with dyeing the tips of my hair. They didn't want them black.

I guess they think if you start doing little things like painting your nails black, then you'll want more and more to do with black, or if they're stereotypical, Gothic or emo things. Then they might think you're depressed, and suicidal and blah blah blah.

So, I think they might be over-reacting just a bit.

some parents think you might be Gothic, and they think Gothic has a lot to do with drugs, killing of Innocent animals for rituals, and they don't want you to get mixed up with that sort of stuff. she just wants to protect you.

hope this gives you a little insight
good luck

when my middle boy was in high school, he talked about gangs and i told him if he really wanted to be beat the he-- out of him i am able and willing to do so, so he would not join the gang. i would make sure he would not hang with those kids who wanted him to join the gang and thank God, he is now a Marine and never joined the gang.

Your parents probably see them as a sign of rebellion. Also the kids who shot up the Columbine School wore black fingernails and black trenchcoats etc. They are just worried about you. The only reason they won't let you do things is because they love you.

My parents need to get a clue too. I guess they do it because they think black is supposed to be a sidn of "death" . I think it is just another color ,buit it depends on how much you wear. Just as long I don't go gothic .lol

Some parents are stupid. Just be happy to know that one day you'll be 18 and they won't be able to stop you anymore.

Also Howard the Dolphin had a good idea.

Or you could start cutting yourself and tell them that you decided to do it because you weren't allowed to paint your fingernails black.

it's just because kids who paint their nails black and dress in black all the time (goths) are usually depressed people who have emotional issues. if it's just another color to you then thats fine but she may see it as a pattern, and she just wants a normal child

tell ur mom that she is insecure w/ herself and so she doesnt want u to do certain things. u are obviously at a age where u need to express urself freely--wear what u want (as long as u dont look like a slu*)

read up on some psychology and what happens at age 15 (im guessing u are near that age)
