To be a good influence on them, to help guide them through life, to be there when they are having problems with their parents, to look after them if the parents arent around. Its like being an honoury parent really but you dont have to ground them or tell them off!

Good luck!

It depends on the family and the child.
I haven't heard from my Godparents in years apart from a present at Christmas, to tell the truth i would actually have preferred a letter and a photo, showing me that they were all well and telling me what they had been up to.
My recommendation would be to send presents at necessary occasions (birthday/Christmas etc) but to also keep in contact, if you live nearby then drop in once every so often, if you live further away then perhaps write every once in awhile enquiring as to how they are and maybe telling them what you've been up to. eg my Godparents have 3 children, so maybe saying what they've been up to at school, or scouts/guides. Just let the Godchild/Godchildren know that you are there, follow there lead.
I hope this is helpful from the point of view of the Godchild and not the Godparent.

my Godparents were present at the baptism, which is almost the biggest role as a Godparent....but i think your godchild gets a soft spot in your heart....my godmother used to give me gifts, ask me to sleep over, brought me out, spent time with me, pray for me, etc etc....basically, the biggest responsibility of being a Godparent is loving and caring for your Godchild....

The main responsibility is to do your best to help educate your godchild in your religion, to see that he or she knows the faith and practices it.

Other than participating in the baptism, I'd say giving the kid gifts at holidays.
