When you feel that the service is worth a little extra, either from your special needs being met or the server taking special care of you. Tips are guidelines. 15% is what the babyboomers started as a guideline. Your own personal beliefs should be your guide. I include in my formula how busy the server is. If the restaurants packed and the server is obviously running and I still get everything needed and correct...well, I think thats worthy of praise and I give my praise in the form of a cash tip. I also do not see a single mistake as a deal breaker as long as it was handled as soon as it was discovered.

I generally tip about 20% on a regular basis. I'll go above 20% or 25% during the holidays, mainly, or if I've had to send my food back for some reason. However, if the waitress gives me an attitude about having to take my food back, I will do the standard 15-20% tip. I never tip under 15% though, no matter how rude the waitress was. You never know what she has been through previously with other customers before it's your turn.

If wait people could vote, you would have a special place in heaven.
I rarely go above 25%, unless the wait person has made my dining experience truly memorable, i.e., attentive without being pushy, friendly without being mawkish, efficient (good timing of food/drink delivery), they anticipated my needs.

I go in with the idea of a 20% tip. It's up to the waitperson to decide if that percentage goes lower or higher. If they really take care of me, I'll go 30%.

If you are having dinner with business associates...then tip generously. If you are alone, and/or will never go back to the restaurant again, 10% would suffice.

I don't know any reason to go above 20% unless you've hit the lottery

Never, unless the service has been EXCEPTIONALLY terrific. You're being overly generous, IMHO, but I bet the servers love you for it!
