This happened in 1999 and it puzzled me a lot and still does, what is your Catholic view of it?

There are some Catholics who were against this action and some Catholics who supported it. But I think we must keep in mind that historically, the kissing of documents, rings and other objects has been a sign of not love but respect. Pope John Paul was not only the leader of the Catholic Church but a politician. He kissed the Koran to show respect for another religion and propagate peace.

According to the following eyewitness, the Pope kissed the Koran as a sign that he has also great respect for Islam and that he was aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people.
The Chaldean Patriarch of Iraq, Raphael I Bidawid is the spiritual guide of the majority of Iraq's one million Christians -- who still celebrate their liturgy in Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus.
Raphael I Bidawid, Patriarch of the Chaldeans told in an interview:
“On May 14th I was received by the Pope, together with a delegation composed of the Shiite imam of Khadum mosque and the Sunni President of the council of administration of the Iraqi Islamic Bank. At the end of the audience the Pope bowed to the Muslim holy book the Koran presented to him by the delegation and he kissed it as a sign of respect. The photo of that gesture has been shown repeatedly on Iraqi television and it demonstrates that the Pope is not only aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people, he has also great respect for Islam.”
With love in Christ.

this is great which you probably did this. i'm no longer so particular no count if this is actual names that we are called, extra so techniques and strategies. to illustrate, priests are called pedophiles, we worship Mary and the Pope, we are no longer Christians, we are cannibals, we pray to saints, cultists, satanists, and of direction, the whore of Babylon. those rude, smug and infantile feedback gets them no the place- so I fail to work out the element for why people call us those names. Even after answer after answer pointing out that we don't worship Mary, they nevertheless bypass on pointing out that we do, like they have some divine reason to have self assurance that. they're in basic terms misinformed- and this is by way persons Catholics to set those questions immediately. Ever observe whilst a Protestant asks a question on the subject of the Catholic church, many Catholics answer thorough and precise solutions, the nicely suited answer- however the Protestant nevertheless possibilities yet another Protestant answer with the aid of fact the main suitable answer? i think of this is straight forward insecurities. all of us be responsive to that none of those names or claims are genuine, and that i've got self assurance that for the period of seek of the nicely suited solutions from fellow Catholics right here in R&S will purely make us extra suitable. Protestants are lacking plenty- they do no longer seem to be purely lacking the particular physique and Blood of Christ, they're lacking plenty extra, God's genuine presence. forget approximately on the subject of the assaults, with the aid of fact this is in basic terms blatant lies.
