Sounds like your doing a good job helping him differenciate reality with video games. Parents are the biggest influence on children and it really is up to them to teach their kids and not blame things on games, music, movies, and television.

Video games DO influence children... They give them better eye-hand coordination! And also improve reflexes and spatial relationship thinking. In short, video games make kids better. I do not advocate allowing young kids to play games that are clearly designed for adults like Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil, in fact I think there should be a yardstick like they have at amusement park rides..."You MUST be this well adjusted to play" but since they can't do that, parents must bear the burden of deciding what games are appropriate for which kids. The problem with this is that parents are usually clueless as to the actual content of the games and like to think of their kids as better than average with a good core sense of morality, and they expect them to just know right from wrong somehow. In your case Five may be a bit young for halo, but if the kid enjoys it and doesn't start torturing the cat for fun I would say let him play.

Video games are great!! As long as the kid isn't playing 24/7. If the kid does other activites then the games are fine. As far as causing a child to be violent that is a load of horse c***. Your attitude towards violence is much more influencial that TV or video games. Consistent parentitng is what is need to prevent undesired behaviors.

I think as long as you make clear to the kid that it's pretend, and they spend plenty of time doing other things, it won't promote violence. The danger is when kids spend all their time playing violent video games and are never taught the difference between that and reality.

My kids and I love playing Ghost Recon, head to head, where its sniper vs. sniper. We always have a good laugh, and they have no pre-disposition towards violence. They know its not real. I remember playing with toy guns, and I never held up a liquor store. God knows I mugged my sister hundreds of times as a kid. LOL
If its something they enjoy doing together, let him have his fun. He's bonding with his dad, and thats a great thing.

Yes, but not any more than TV. And definitely less than their family and the people they are around.

On the flip side, I think games can be a good release and escape for kids when they need it. Counter-Strike was pretty good for when I was angry...but then again, it made me angry a few times, too. I think it goes both ways.
