I think the best course of action would be to be honest. Tell them that your "past actions=lessons learned=future behavior"...
If, however, you choose to not be completely honest and then come clean later on, they could use it against you.

Good luck!

Only the State Troppers will actually make you take a lie detector test. But if you want to be honest, be honest. There's no sense in not applying just because you might not get the job. If you're going to be honest, just do it. If they don't hire you, at least you tried. If you don't even apply, you have no chance. Just tell them it was something you did when you were young and stupid and it wasn't something you would like to do again. You'd be surprised, alot of Sheriff's deputies in small towns smoke pot too.

Not sure about Canada but duting the hiring process and the polygrapgh (if there is one) they're just looking for honesty. I'd bet ,ore than half the cops out there half smoked weed, admitted it and were hired.

Worse case senario, is you put in for it and don't get it this time around. If that's the case, sit down with your interviewer and find out why.

My department will actually pre-interview subjest sthat have questions about their work history and past history, just to let them know what they need to do to get their "crap' together before the actual application process.
Contact them, and pose that question to someone in command-see if they'll bite on it and I'm sure it'll put you on the right path to geting the job.

Ok, if things were not along time ago,

But in general they will ask about drug usage and if you have been arrested before ( which they will know from your records anyway) and if you have stolen anything.

some departments will overlook a small amount of pot use but many won't either.

If you had been out of school for 10 years, then it will be different.

no and don't do it. Thats why they ask the questions to see how honest you are. In Colorado most departments require a polygraph, to verify your response to the questions you answered. Don't risk your future credibilty trying to pull a fast one.
