For the most part, they still function in society. There have been serious cutbacks in the health care system, causing a lot of mental health facilities to close so that the people who need psychiatric help aren't able to get it, and are thrown back out into the streets to tell us otherwise well adjusted individuals that we are going to this place called 'Hell'.It puzzles me every time they say that, too, because I've heard nothing about my job being transferred to Michigan.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell,_Michigan

There are four reasons.
1: Christians are no more likely to hear voices than non christians.
2: Approximately 1/3 of the adult population hears voices, far too many to successfully keep in mental hospitals.
3: Mental hospitals are only for people so insane that they cannot survive on their own. The crazies that think electricity is a little gerbil hiding behind the wall don't harm anyone, so they live in the appartment above you. The christians that hear Jesus tell them to be a good person can still hold down a job, they live across the street.
4: Insanity is socially defined by the members of each society. Our society has selected doctors to define insanity for us... AND THEY'RE CHRISTIANS TOO!

Perhaps it's because the simple fact that someone can hear voices, by who it doesn't matter, does not make them a danger to society or themselves. People who get locked up are either a danger to those around them or a danger to themselves, or choose to be locked up.
Why does it bother you when someone claims to hear the voice of Jesus? I personally do not entirely alllign myself with what most Christians would define as the Christian faith, however, I believe everyone has the right to believe in whatever "myths" they like.

Not all Christians, even the ones who "talk to God', are biggoted and hateful. There are many wonderful people out there who call themselves Christians, just as there is from any faith. Someone's beliefs don't make them automatically the same as other people with the same beliefs. You shouldn't prejudge someone just because they say they are a Christian. To do so shows closed mindedness in part.

Wow, have you done a lot of research on Jesus. Clearly you have by calling Jesus a myth (mucho sarcasm implied). There is more evidence that Jesus existed from Roman law than to prove the existance of Julius Caesar. Every time the romans would move a prisoner they would sign who was the guard and the post and where the prisoner would be moved to. The recieving soldier would sign that he received the prisoner. They were very meticulous in their note taking because the punishment for losing a prisoner was death. Here is my advice to you. Don't post anything ever. It's better that people think you're an idiot, than for you to open your mouth and confirm it.

I often wonder this myself.
They lock other people up that hear "voices" inside their heads. What is so different about claiming to talk to the invisible man? The main reason, I believe, is because they think this country was found on christianity. And so people just assume the role of talking to god. When infact, this country was not found on christianity. It shares many of the same "laws" of that religion, but most religions practice these "laws" anyways.

There is no legal or medical justification for locking up people in mental hospitals for hearing voices (of any kind). This is simply an example of Christian bigotry

1.) The vast majority of Christians (or any other religious group) don't "hear voices", and 2.) hearing voices isn't enough to get anyone locked up. People are only committed if they are dangerous. Being schizophrenic doesn't necessarily make someone dangerous.

I am not mental thank you. And for the last time Jesus is not a myth. Do you even own a Bible? I will even loan you mine. Read the Bible and quit being so rude to Christians.

Because no one can prove either way that there is or isn't a god so they may not be mistaken. It is a 50/50 split between those who do believe and those who don't believe.
There are people who might ask the same question about people who choose to be homosexual or those who like rap music. You can't lock people up because they believe in something that you do not believe in.
