First off, my parents never wished me a Happy Birthday. Secondly, they 'surprise' me by saying that they want to go to a movie. Guess what it is? Lady in the Water. I saw the damn movie twice already. I just hate today...it seems like my parents don't give a **** about my feelings. Oh well. I only turn 14 once.

Can someone tell me how I can cope with this?

Hey, Ms. Attitude,
Did you clue your parents in to the fact that you've already seen that movie twice? Probably not. Why bother communicating? Parents are natural mind readers anyway...
And they don't give a $#it about your feelings? Do you have a roof over your head? Food? Clothes? Probably a cell phone, computer, & an Ipod? I'm just guessing. One thing's for sure, you've got pocket money to see Lady in the Water twice.

Can someone tell you how you can cope with this?

Such Traumatic Drama. People have to cope with things a lot worse than that.

Big picture, it ain't that bad. Lives aren't being lost, your house isn't burning to the ground, you haven't been diagnosed with inoperable cancer, or AIDS, or any other terrible disease.

Cut your parents some slack. They work hard to provide you with the things you take for granted. And for all you know, they may have secretly arranged to surprise you later tonight.

And even if they didn't, you should thank them for all they do the other 364 days of the year. What are you wanting to celebrate anyways? The day you came into existence. Couldn't have happened without them now, could it?

Now, if you're still reading this, let me wish you a Happy Birthday. My gift to you is a broader perspective. Please use it frequently. Try to imagine how somebody else observe the way you react to things, and what their reaction to your actions might be.

Live long and prosper

Between the age of 13-26, nothing your parents do will seem right... except perhaps dancing with you on your wedding, but that will require hours of coaching.

Thankfully, your 14th birthday is when the magical pixies sprinkle hotness dust all over you. When you go out from now on, you'll need pepper spray to keep the boys off you. Isn't that a good enough birth day present?

Your parents may believe that by the time you turn 14, you should be capable of planning your own birthday parties, so next year, work with them to get you a real bash with all your friends, and since it's summer time, it can be a really cool pool party, or maybe even a beach party, with water balloon fights and all that jazz... or whatever it is you like about cool birthday parties.

The best way to cope with this is to try to view your life as a long story, not in one-day episodes. You're not the only teen in the world who thinks their parents are dumb. Most teens do at some point, but they get over it. It sounds like your parents TRIED to do something nice. Be accountable for your own satisfaction today and suggest they you go see a different movie. It is YOUR birthday, right? Imagine yourself looking back at the end of your life. Look back over all the wonderful things you will experience and accomplish. You will probably view your parents as kind people who did their best (and had issues of their own) and that you are a normal teen in the big picture.

forget about it. my parents totally forgot my bday. my dad never called, none of my friends called---only my boyfriend. he was broke so he didnt give me anything but a rice crispy treat. thats all i got.

in other cultures they dont even celebrate birthday's. im sure u got some presents so just be grateful. be grateful u live in a country where u can go see a movie for 8 bucks because 1/3 or this world is living in poverty and will never see a movie....much less wear nike's or have air conditioning or a heater in their home.

think about the less fortunate for once. i cant believe how spoiled america is. my birthday sucked too, but i didnt care. u know what i did? i gave blood and i donated all my old clothes. that made me feel better because now a little boy might be able to live on his birthday, and some girl might actually get a t-shirt and jeans for her birthday becaue for 13 years she's never gotten a present.

Well I'll wish you a happy birthday! It does seem extra bad when you get let down on a day that should be good for you. Did you tell them you don't want to go see that movie? If not I would, I would say its my birthday so why don't I get to pick what we do? Make sure you give as good as you get when their bdays roll around too.

First off, Happy Birthday
secondly, bet you are surprised that I remembered
While they are seeing LITW, can you and a friend see another movie at the same place? I let my 14 yr old do that...then everybody sees something appropriate for them.

Enjoy it now, wait until you turn 20 and no one notices and you are too old for your parents to do anything except say happy birthday. It's your day celebrate it with yourself, throw your own party because no one else will when you are older

First, Happy (belated?) Birthday!

Second - I can relate to hating your birthday - my best friend and I used to share the same B-day -- and then he was killed in an accident and now I hate celebrating that day (which is in two days.) because the memories are too painful.

I don't know how to cope with mine, so it's difficult to tell you what to do.

Try hanging with your friends, invite them to your house and celebrate with family and friends.

Aloha!
