Go to WalMart and buy some Organic Flax Seed Oil and some gentle dog shampoo specifically for dogs with skin problems. Feed the dog 1 tablespoon of Flax Oil in about 1/4 cup of either cottage cheese, unsweetened yogurt, or milk 2 times per day. The flax oil will help the dog's immune system help itself but cannot be absorbed correctly into the body without the enzymes in the above mentioned dairy products. Wash the dog about every 5-7 days with the gentle shampoo, making SURE you rinse thoroughly. This will help the dog not to want to itch quite so much. When they itch too much they make themselves bleed. Not rinsing good enough can leave itchy soap on the dog and make it worse. Don't wash more often than this as you can dry out doggie's skin and make them itch more that way too. DO NOT feed your dog any processed people food. Nothing that has starch or sugar in it especially. Not even jerky. The sugars and chemicals in these lower the immune system. The reason a dog can't fight off mange is because they don't have immunity to it. You don't want to do anything to worsen their immune system because the biggest problem with mange is this: a dog trying to fight off mange is very succeptible to getting a SECONDARY infection such as an ear infection or even pnumonia, which can kill them. If you do not notice improvement after doing this for 3 weeks, or if the dog gets worse or develops signs of a secondary infection, then you NEED to go to the vet anyway if you don't want to lose your dog. The best cure is prevention so your best bet is to take the dog to the vet this time, and then keep the flax oil treatment going at 1 tablespoon in specified dairy product every few days and up the dose to twice a day every day if you notice the itching coming back. If the vet tells you that there's no hope for your dog to live a normal life because of the mange, get a different vet. I had one vet tell me this about my dog but she's fine now living a happy life and only gets the itchies for a month twice a year. Good luck!

I hope you are not one of the idiots that will actually put used oil on the dog.
There is no home remedy for mange. It needs to be treated by a vet. It does also depend on the type of mange the dog has as to how successful the treatment will be.
See the vet.

There are two types of mange in dogs, both types make the skin red and inflammed. Both cause itching.

Sarcoptic mange: Caused by mites and is contagious to people & other animals. This type can be cured by dips. There are also some over the counter remedies for this one, you may want to check at your local feed or pet store. Don't put burnt motor oil or transmission fluid on your dog. This really messes up a dog's liver.

Demodex mange is a whole other can of worms. You don't really cure as much as control.outbreaks This is also caused by mites but all dogs have this type of mite. In a normal dog, the dogs immune system keeps check on these mites so they don't cause any trouble. Dogs that develop demodicosis can't fight off this mite. There is nothing topical that can be put on these dogs that will really solve the problem.

The current treatment for Demodex is Ivermectin given orally. This drug can kill a dog that has heartworm and Collie & Collie mix dogs. The dosage for this drug can be tricky and overdose is common. This is why a trip to your vet is in order.

What you can do for your dog that your vet may or may not suggest is changing his food and adding suppliments. Since Demodex is an immunity problem you can boost your dog's natural immunity by superior diet (no corn, wheat or soy). I would look into chelated zinc, flax seed oil & Beta Glucans. Also since outbreaks are triggered by stress, keeping this dog on a regular schedule of excerise, meals, suppliments & good preventive health care, really helps. Keep your dog and his area clean. This dog MUST be spayed or neutered. This condition is genetic. Also, never give a dog with demodicosis cortisone, as it suppresses the immune system.

You can treat the other problems that go along with either type of mange topically. Staph infection is quick to set in with either type as there is a lot of scratching and skin damage. Chlorhexidine shampoos can really help if given frequently.
Oral antibiotics are very helpful also.

There is no home remedy. Get your dog to the vet immediately. Proper vet care is part of owning a dog, and if you can't afford to care for it then please find somebody who will.
