Many different types of cast on used nowdays. Sometimes a old style plaster cast which is heavy and white is used. Sometimes a fiberglass cast is used which is lighter in weight and colored to whatever the patient wants. A cast can also be made of a piece of plaster with ACE wraps which are stretchy fabric. Often this type of cast is used at the first sign of injury to allow the tissue to swell and give plenty of air to the skin. Finally, different types of metal, or plastic supports or immobilizers can be used. Often these can be refered to as walking casts since they allow the person to place some or all of their body weight on that leg.
