I read in the latest issue of Discovery magazine that it may not be necessary to express oneself in a formal manner. To paraphrase the pundit, "All that is necessary is that a person can understand a statement, even if is written in an informal manner without regard to proper grammar and/or spelling.." I disagree but would like to know what others think.

Realistic Human's answer is a good example of what the pundit is saying. Even though Realistic attempted to disobey all grammar and spelling rules, I think everyone would say that they understood him completely.

It's true that proper spelling and grammar isn't always needed to convey ideas to people, but it is important when trying to convey your ideas in a professional manner. If you explain everything properly, there is no room for confusion. Improper spelling or grammar can make certain statements arbitrary or ambigious.

I agree with the magazine to a certain extent. I think it is not necessary to take care of grammar and spelling if the way something is expressed does not lead to misunderstanding, or to total failure to understand the message. I wouldn't correct the grammar or spelling of a message if the message is clear anyway, because grammar and spelling are just ways to arrive to the meaning. If you go through a different way, but you get to your destination, who cares you didn't take the "right" way?

On the other hand, grammar and spelling are there to help you get your message through. If a sentence is impossible to understand, then something should be done.

I think proper spelling and grammar are very important. It is disrespectful and slovenly to use abbreviations and bad usage of the language, not to mention it makes the writer appear uneducated.

correct grammar and spelling is actually important but not needed as long as you can express yourself and as long as people understand you, thats the thing that matters.
