On commencing service an offficer earnes £20,397. After the initial training they then earn £22,770. After 5 years ...£27,213 and after 10 years ...£ 32,025. The salary does not rise every year, but they normally get the Government rise every September.
Apart from paying tax and national ins. they have to pay around 9% of their salary each month towards their pension. And by the way, the housing benefit was abolished years ago unless they were previously in the armed forces before joining the police in which case they continue to get it. They don't get any extra pay unless the overtime is authorised . If an officer gets held up after the shift ends he only gets time off in lieu ( no payment ) and that only starts after the first hour. In other words these people are very dedicated and put in lots of unpaid hours.... sometimes ending up working over 12 hours in a shift.
