My daughter is 6 and goes to bed between 8 and 830pm, on some nights I let her stay up until 9pm. Although I have noticed on days that she is not very active, she likes to stay up later, so I try to keep her moving and active thoughout the day. This helps with her sleeping. During the summer she is still going to bed at the same time.

Depends on the child...some need more sleep...others need less. When my daughter was 6 I had her in bed by 7:30 and she was a big 'sleeper'. At 10 hours of rest she was okay. At 8 hours she was exhausted before lunch time....at 12 she was a dream.
I would suggest that you work backwards from the time your child has to get up and take into consideration what their optimum hours of sleep are and I think you'll have your answer.
I.E. Janie needs 10 hours a sleep a night or she's impossible to live with the next day. She has to get up for school at 7:30 so she has to be in bed by 9:30 pm.
Most children at the age of 6 need a good 10 or more hours of sleep a night. They're learning and doing so much each day. And just remember to set a good bedtime routine and follow it. (no sugar or caffeine after 5 p.m. at night, limit the rough house type of play....bath, story, drink of water followed by lights out).
With your child probably entering school full time this year, it's a great idea to set the routine now so that it won't be 'new' to him/her come September.
Good Luck.

I have a 7 year old and I keep him on an 8p.m bed time. That way he is well rested for school! Also during the summer we go to bed at about 8:30. But for that half hour we read or talk. No Tv it is just winding down time for us.

Quit the active play and clean up toys at 7:00pm. You want them to calm down so make sure that all noisy distractions like TV and loud older siblings (or Dad) are quiet and respect the little ones bedtime routine. Then take bath, brush teeth, pyjamas, etc. After that read some bedtime stories and cuddle and kiss good night. Lights out/nightlights on. The child should be asleep by 8pm.

Hi
My daughter is 6, and on school nights she is in bed between 730pm and 8pm,,each child is different, and depends on the amount of sleep they need. My oldest was a child that never required alot of sleep,,he was and is up at 6 am each morning. My day with him started at 5 am when he was little. But my daughter, will sometimes sleep in to 8;30-10 am ,,so i feel for her bedtime about 8 pm is a great time. mind ya with school being out sometimes, its 930-10pm,,,but when it gets about 2-3 weeks before school, she is in bed at a regular time each night, Is your child cranky in the morning or during the day if he/she is up till 8-9 pm,,,try a few different times to see what is best, for a happier, smiling child, she how he/she come 4 pm,,usually by that time, if they went to bed too late, they are cranky, whiny, short tempered.
Hope that helped

I put my 5 year old to sleep at 8:00 during school night and during the summer whatever time he wants that's usually before 10:30.

I think if you start a routine with your child they become accustomed to it. I liked to give my kids a bath after dinner and read a story at bed time and they soon get the idea after the bath it is bed time and at that age I think around 7-8 it an appropriate time.
