Music (classical calms and interests them), visual stimulation (children's museums, art events, crayons/coloring books, craft classes), anything like a playground that has motion or things to move in them (I even took my two to swimming lessons at that age -- just have to be more aware of where they are at all times), and ... a very cheap digital camera that you can show him how to turn on, and then teach him how to take a picture with. Tell him that when he sees something he likes, to take a picture of it. Then download the pictures and see what he is seeing. I also bought a bicycle trailer (with canopy/rain fly) that toddlers can be belted in (put a helmet on my Asperger's child -- An Autism Spectrum Disorder), and just bicycle down a nature trail. The kids love the motion, and the camera in their hands (make sure you belt its handle into the trailer too), then just go forward.

Keep things simple and repeat the activities thoughout the week. Activities that include the physical movement and using different senses.

The weather is warm..go outside with ice cubes. Place the ice in different areas. Example..on the hot pavement...in the grass..in a cooler. Ask questions...whats going to happen to them...He could explore the ice and cool off at the same time. Use chalk on the pavement to mark the melting.

An awesome book that has activities for children with sensory issues is The Out of Sync Child Has Fun by Carol Stock Kranowitz. It has all kinds of activities for children with differing abilities (and distractablities!) We use a lot of the activities with our children with autism at the preschool I work at for children with disabilities. You can find this book at Barnes and Noble, Walden Books, etc in the parenting section. You can also try your local library, but it really depends on the library's size whether or not they will have it. Have fun, and ask your nephew's parents for sure-fire ideas for your nephew. They know best what will set him off and what he will enjoy and be able to handle, so make sure to talk over your activity ideas with the parents first.

Autistic kids love sensory motor activites! You can play with side walk chalk. Make homemaid playdough! Also since it is summer you can buy Shaving cream and let them play with it. Spray it on their hands the sidewalk. They love the way it feels! That is my favorite thing I did with an Autistic girl I worked with. They love the toy for babies where they have to fit the shapes into the can. You can have them play with pots and pans. Like in a band. Play music and dance. Play with a ball. turn on a sprinkler. You have to do things that sensor them! anything with loud noise or just noise and things they can touch. I hope that helps you.
