Either would be great, but it depends what else you are using to prepare the gnocchi.

If you really have to choose I would go with a red sauce because gnocchi needs (or at least goes very well with) a sweet accompaniment, such as prunes (sliced or diced, or try stuffing the gnocchi with them) or raisins. The addition of sweet dried fruit will make all the difference in the world. Prunes or raisins would go best with a red (wine) sauce, and if you decide to go with a white (wine) sauce, you can use dried apricots which would go better with the white sauce. Take my advice on the dried fruit addition, and the dish will be very tasty!

Another tip, if you are going for something fancy, is to serve the dish, even as an appetizer, with warm foie gras (duck or goose liver). A little foie gras goes a long way! (Don't substitute the foie gras for the dried fruit, as foie gras also needs something slightly sweet to balance it). Serve the dish with little glasses of port wine (tawny, preferably), or a sweet white like a Sauternes or a Tokaji from Hungary. :)) Now, talk about classy! Enough info for ya?? :)) Bon appetit!

Butter sauce! Pumpkin and sage with a brown butter sauce is the best! OoOoH Yummy!

I supposed it really depends upon if you prefer baked potatoes and butter or ketchup and fries?

I actually prefer it with a creamy tomato sauce, which is basically a mix of red and white sauces.

Red, but I like mine fried in butter. White if they are boiled.

Personally, I'd go with red, it has a tangier flavor. Looks pretty too.
