Unless your doctor has indicated that surgery is necessary, don't panic. There are other ways of treating an enlarged prostate. Enlargement doesn't necessarily mean a malignancy. There are a lot of new techniques, surgically or non-surgically, you might be able to try. Follow your doctor's advice, and if you want to be absolutely certain, get a second opinion. Surgery is not always the only answer. See if there are other medical procedures or medicines that can cure your condition.

You can get your doctor to prescribe a medication called Flomax. It doesn't actually decrease the amount of tissue in your prostate - it constricts the blood vessels in your prostate (which makes your prostate smaller and makes it easier for you to pass urine). However, this doesn't always work and I think the only definitive solution is surgical. What is the part that scares you? If it is the anesthetic, you can have the surgery done under a spinal - very effective for this type of surgery. Is it the surgery itself? I have looked after a lot of gentlemen who have had this type of surgery and they have a minimal pain and complications, and are much more comfortable in the long run.

If you are a male, you have a prostate gland.
If you bow face down on the ground, you are lying prostrate.
Proscar and Avodart are drugs that can shrink a swollen prostate. Laser treatment is another option. Before starting any prostate treatment make sure and have a PSA test to make sure you don't have prostate cancer.

Your doctor can prescribe a drug that will over time will shrink the prostate. You shouldn't need surgery unless it becomes cancerous. (In my case it did and I've had surgery twice. I now take drugs to combat the cancer. And yes, I plan on beating it). .
Believe me, I was scared of surgery too but it was necessary.

So far I know that there is no effective medication to reduce the size of prostate. Surgical intervention is still the choice of solutions.
