I am 14 and I have been suffering with anorexia for about 3 years. Anorexia is a mental illness where your perception of yourself is distorted. Often people with anorexia are underweight and try and loose weight even though they are told they are thin. I think that now a days there are too many people who think its cool to be anorexic. Being anorexic is something that I wish was over. It has caused other things to start such as cutting. It is not something to aspire to be. Being anorexic is very painful for your friends and family. I hope that all people-especially teens-who think they are too fat but are told they are thin, will get help. Try and trust an adult. I know that's a common thing that is said but just try. I was never able to and its been hard to struggle on my own. Going on line to sites like these is helpful because then you don't feel alone. I hope this was helpful to anybody who may be thinking they are anorexic.

I disagree, I think its completely possible to be anorexic, and know that you're anorexic. It may not have been like that 10 years ago, but with all the media exposure and the rise in 'pro-ana' websites, it isnt such an 'unknown' anymore...even to people who have it. Its becoming more and more acceptable (amongst anorexics) to 'choose' wether or not to recover.
The real difference is that someone who has anorexia is secretive about it, and unlikely to freely admit it to others. There are alot of criteria that define it, weight, loss of period, behavioural changes, small food intake...etc... These are being reviewed, however, because they sometimes rule out people who have a very dangerous disease simply because they lack one criteria, they still menstruate for example.

A true anorexic would not think they are anorexic they would believe they are fat as that is what anorexia is all about. Your mind has an altered opinion on your body image. Anorexics are anyone who is a third under their correct weight for their height.

i agree in the most part with answer one

where i would diagree though is that when someone accepts they are anorexic they do not just accept they are skinny and stop being anorexic

it is still an uphill struggle to get back to normal eating and for them to view themselfs as others view them (skinny)

there is still the awful fear of putting on weight even when it is accepted that that is what is needed

food still holds a lot of fear and once anorexia is acknowledged a lot of help and support is needed to help the sufferer get back to a normal eating pattern a healthy view of themselfs and to get them to have a healthy relationship with food

by the way anorexia is not an illness that only affects teenagers and preteens it can and does affect people in their 30's

Anorexic is a disease where you are super skinny but do not realise it, and think they are fat so most people who are anorexic will not say they are anorexic because if they accepted that they were anorexic then they would no longer be anorexic, they would just be skinny and acceptant...

confusing but true...

im not, im just slim
