Not even close.
In the 1980's all of our equipment was current and up to date. We had the industrial infrastructure to ensure that we would have adequate supplies and we had large enough forces so that we would not have to scramble shifting soldiers around to find enough personnel for an operation as small as Iraq.
When I was in Iraq we had a shortage of rifle ammunition because we shut down all of the factories that made the stuff in the 1990s.

I would argue that its probably way stronger then the 1980s. The federal government spends alot of money on the military its third(only higher is social security and medicare). Lets recall that in 1980s i think they would surely like to have the gps that the current military does, the satelite imaging that we have today. Overall the military is probably almost 2 time stronger then the 1980s.

Visa a vi the rest of the world, no. Our present simple minded idea that we can take our Army overseas and kill all the bad guys, or at least scare the cow paddy right out of them, is so inane that it scares the cow paddy right out of a lot of Americans including me.
The problem is that Bush did not continue and accelerate the destruction the education system early enough in America to keep lots of us from being completely under-educated.
You see, it is not hard to understand that killing all the bad guys is at best a 1950's TV plot in a Western style movie, that just has no place in foreign policy.
Mr. Ronald Reagan had the good guy with the white hat thing down perfectly, but as many of us worried, along comes little brother, hero of the west in his own image, who employees our Army for his terrible dark vision.
And here we are.

No, because the people who do the fighting are the primary winners of war. We don't put money into that, just more Nukes that we aren't going to use!
We have less troops today, and most of them are tied up at the moment!
Would be a great time to attack America if I were her enemy!
